Macroeconomics and Health:Investing in Health for Economic Development

The world’s political leaders have recognized this global interdependence in solemn commitments to improve the lives of the world’s poor by the year 2015. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), adopted at the Millennium Summit of the United Nations in September 2000, call for a dramatic reduction in poverty and marked improvements in the health of the poor. Meeting these goals is feasible but far from automatic. Indeed, on our current trajectory, those goals will not be met for a significant proportion of the world’s poor. Success in achieving the MDGs will require a seriousness of purpose, a political resolve, and an adequate flow of
resources from high-income to low-income countries on a sustained and well-targeted basis.
